“Film school should inspire you to make cinema, the Craftsmanship which you learn there is Bonus." - Milos Forman

What does it require to become a director?  A Director is a person who is the “creative person having management skills” to handle production along with all the creative aspects that go into the making of a film. Director turns the pages of a script into reality on the screen. A director decides the camera angle, directs the work of the cast and crew, and guides the work of the costume designers, choreographers, and music directors. He leads a crew of 50-100 professionals, handling their egos, who may have personal differences with each other. Our Film direction course makes you understand what it requires to become an assistant director. One generally starts his/her career as an Assistant Director until and unless you are fortunate enough to be born into the family of Yash Chopra, Subhash Ghai or Bernardo Bertoluchi.

Film direction course also includes the role that an assistant director plays. He has to ensure the timely arrangement of things that are required for the shoot. Assistant director acts as a coordinator: gives dialogue to the artists, writes continuity report, gives clap before the shot, while the producer and director work on the artistic aspect of the film. There can be one or more assistant directors, depending upon the budget of the film. The responsibilities range from technical pre-planning of production to coordinating the crew, cast, and scenery within a prescribed budget. Additional responsibilities include keeping records of film sequences, scripts, call sheets, and daily reports.

Handling actors is considered as one of the important elements of fiction filmmaking. Film direction course is a practical laboratory for film and television directors who want to explore the process of directing actors and the camera. Directors will cast and rehearse a team of professional actors, work out blocking and camera movement, inspiring performances, to tell a story.

Students during the film direction course at CRAFT will gain industry perspectives by studying the structure, composition, and interaction of the various elements of the entertainment industry. Students gain an understanding of the key players and relationships that drive the industry.

Film direction course also provides input about television direction. After the advent of cable television in India, various avenues are available to directors to find employment. Depending on your aptitude, you can explore documentary film making, work in television stations, work as a freelance director for television serials, talk shows, game shows, music videos, or even set foot in lucrative ad film making.
Directing feature-length fictions are the ultimate dream of any director and with the influx of multiplexes in India, it is not as difficult as it used to be 15 years ago. Young film school graduates are creating independent films within a budget of 2-3 crores, which are making waves in the international market and are well appreciated by film critics as well. Even regional quality films are being applauded in Cannes, Berlin and are finding International theatrical releases. Any film school in India that offers film direction course, should offer you all the necessary inputs to make you realize your dream and this is what we do at CRAFT Film School.
